Listen: On Self-Forgiveness

What hooked me on astrology, back when I started really digging into it in the late 1990s and early 2000s, was the realization that your birth chart pretty much shows you what you’re going to struggle with. Your ‘character defects’ — as they’re called in the 12-step framework, show up clear as day in your natal horoscope.

Some of these weaknesses or tendencies for self-sabotage or other moral failings will largely exist only as potentials. Not all Pisces will become delusional drunks or drug addicts and not all Geminis will be sociopathic liars. Not all Virgos will live as anal-retentive clean freaks and not all…you get the idea.

But some of the wound patterns in the natal horoscope will emerge across a lifetime as legitimate thorns in the side, patterns or behaviors we struggle with repeatedly and which require a lot of love, care, attention, and help from others for us to successfully overcome.

When I learned enough about astrology to see my character defects and weak points in my natal chart, I experienced a powerfully healing revelation: most of the weaknesses, failings, and shortcomings that I have shamed myself for experiencing or beaten myself up for having are simply the soul lessons I agreed to work on in this lifetime.

Why was this realization so healing? Because it gave me enough perspective to start forgiving myself.
